The Canary Islands Convention Centre will host the XVII National Surgery Meeting from October 21st to 24th 2009, an event where over a thousand national and international experts will present and analyze the most recent advances in surgery. At the same time, a wide commercial exhibit will be celebrated by the most important enterprises of the pharmaceutical industry. This is the second time the Gran Canarian capital city hosts this important medical meeting. During four days, the Canary Islands Convention Centre will be the scientific frame to approach to the latest news in metabolic surgery. This surgical technique has shown very good results to help diabetes- II patients with slight or moderate obesity.

In this event, organized by the Spanish Surgeons Association (AEC), there will also be shown the latest news in Major Ambulatory Surgery (MAS). This type of surgery is widely used in areas such as general surgery, gynecology, orthopedic or urology.

The advantages of this procedure are multiple: it’s not only less invasive; it doesn’t require the patient to be admitted in the hospital, which reduces remarkably contamination risks. Nowadays, it’s estimated 45% of the operations are made in Spain by the major ambulatory surgery procedure.

Other themes to be debated are the advances in the diagnosis, prognosis and treatment for breast cancer, where other oncologic pathologies will be discussed, such as: colon cancer surgery, or the multidisciplinary approach to lung tumors. On the other hand, results on mid-rectum removal will be explained, as well as the latest advances in organ transplant, since Spain is one of the countries most experienced in this yield.

Surgeon’s continuing education is a priority for the Spanish Surgeon Associations, that’s why in this XVII National Surgery Meeting, novel surgeons will have their own space to debate and analyze many data and videos about the ultimate subjects of the specialty. The aim of this scientific summit is to update every aspect today’s surgeons are concerned about.
