The organist and harpsichord player, Léon Berben, will feature a new edition of the Organ Series in the Alfredo Kraus Auditorium. The concert will take place on October 4th at 12:30 h. It is supported by the Philharmonic Society of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and it is sponsored by SECURITAS.

Léon Berben was born in Heerlen, The Netherlands, in 1970 and lives in Köln. He studied harpsichord and organ in the Royal Conservatoire of The Hague and the Sweelinck Conservatoire of Amsterdam with Rienk Jiskoot, Bob van Asperen, Ton Koopman and Gustav Leonhardt, here he earned a soloist diploma.

Between 2000 and 2006 he was harpsichord player of the ensemble Musica Antiqua Köln conducted by Reinhard Goebel. He performed in Europe, Asia, North and South America. He also recorded some CD’s for the Deutsche Grammophon/Archivproduktion. In November 2006, Musica Antiqua Köln disolved. Since then, Léon Berben has played chamber music and soloist repertoire.

Léon Berben offers soloist recitals of harpsichord and organ. His soloist CD’s recorded for the companies Ramée and Aeolous with historical organs and harpsichords were flattered by the press, and he received many distinctions. In fact he was included in the quarterly chart of the best recordings, published by the German discography critic, and the ‘Choc’ of Monde de la Musique.

Besides his concert activity, Berben researches history of music and musical theory: he publishes essays about the practice of historical renditions and he is coauthor of the German musical encyclopedia MGG (Musik in Geschichte und Gegenwart).

Berben’s repertoire includes compositions for key instruments of the period 1550-1750, and his main interests are focused in German music, Virginists and Sweelinck.

He owns and plays three harpsichords built in 1996 by Willem Kroesbergen (copies of the harpsichords made by Couchet), as well as two clavichords built in 2003 by Keith Hill and by Zell (according to Ruckers’s models from 1624).
