The Portuguese Mariza, ambassador of fado around the world, visits the Alfredo Kraus Auditorium

Portuguese singer Mariza will perform in the Symphonic Hall of Alfredo Kraus Auditorium of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria on July 26th at 20:00 h. In this concert, the first Portuguese artist nominated to a Grammy, will present her last album ‘Terra’, defined by herself as her masterpiece. This is the album where she has grown up the most as a performer, now she is considered as an ambassador of fado around the world.

With her reformist aesthetic and her incomparable energy and talent, Mariza has revolutionized the world of fado, in and outside of Portugal. Just like her mother, she was born in Mozambique and her father was Portuguese; at the age of three she moved with her family to the neighborhood lisboeta de la Mouraria, the crib of fado.

After a personal period in Brazil, the singer inherited Amália Rodrigues’s style (passed away in October, 1999), and started to look for a renovation of traditional fado beyond the work of international artists like Dulce Pontes, Mísia or Carlos do Carmo. This way she became in the worldwide greatest ambassador of new Portuguese music, earning during three years the BBC Radio 3 award as best European artist.

Her first album Fado em mim (2001) was a success in Portugal. Since then she has done other five works: Fado curvo (2003) which gave her excellent critics internationally, Live in London (2004), Transparente (2005), the CD and DVD Concerto Em Lisboa (2006), with this one she was the first Portuguese artist to be nominee to the Grammy Award, and afterwards Terra (2008).

For this new record, she’s been accompanied by: guitarist Dominic Miller (one of Sting’s musicians during the past twenty years), three pianists, Brazilian Ivan Lins and Cuban Chucho Valdês and Ivan ‘Melon’ Lewis, Flamenco guitarist Javier Limón and Spanish percussionist Piraña (Paco De Lucia’s favorite one).

The voice of Mariza merges with Tito Paris’s (Cape Verde) and the voice of afro-Hispanic Concha Buika. After working with Jorge Fernando, Carlos Maria Trindade and Jacques Morelenbaum, Mariza has chosen Spanish Javier Limón as producer of ‘Terra’. The fusion between flamenco and morna (the music from Cape Verde), jazz and folk and Portuguese sounds are present constantly.

In 2007, Mariza performed in the movie Fados, of Spanish director Carlos Saura, where she sang ‘Meu fado meu’ along with flamenco singer Miguel Póveda and ‘Ó gente da minha terra’.

She was awarded as the best European artist by the BBC Radio 3 (she would earn that prize again in 2005 and 2006). In 2004, she was elected as Personality of the year by the Foreign Press Association in Portugal, and she was nominated as fado ambassador by the UNESCO ‘Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity’.

Tickets for the concert of Mariza are available at: Auditorio Alfredo Kraus, from 10:00 to 14:00 and from 16:30 to 20:30 h, Monday to Friday; and from 10:00 to 14:00 h on Saturdays. By Internet at Cajatique - La Caja de Canarias and by calling: 902 405 504.
