THE FUSION OF CLASSIC AND POSTMODERN OF JEAN-MICHEL PILC TRIO, IN ‘EL RINCON DEL JAZZ‘ | |
‘El Rincón del Jazz’ of Alfredo Kraus Auditorium will receive Jean-Michel Pilc Trio, on May 15th, at 22:30 h in San Borondón Hall. This band leaded by pianist Jean-Michel Pilc, is known for its classic jazz and postmodern fusion. Pilc was born in Paris in 1960; he started to play the piano at the age of ten. Mostly self-taught, he’s emerged as one of the most famous European composers, pianists and arrangers. He has performed and recorded with many artist of Europe such as Martial Solal, Michel Poral, Daniel Humair, J-F. Jenny-Clark, Aldo Romano, and André Ceccarelli. And also with American artists as Roy Haynes and Jean Toussaint. He has performed in more than forty cities, and has made several soundtracks for movies. His last European work is ‘Big One’ it includes original music for a 13-instrument orchestra, and his compositions have also been recorded in Europe by many contemporary artists. In 1995 he wanted to widen up his musical experience, so he went to New York. There he resumed his activities and made a new trio with bassist Francois Moutin and drum player Ari Hoenig. With this ensemble he recorded an album in a studio (Jean-Michel Pilc Trio) and two more recordings unplugged (Live At Sweet Basil 1 & 2). Both recordings earned extraordinary critics, which gave the trio a brilliant international reputation, since they toured Europe and participated in many festivals. He has received the prestigious Django Reinhardt Prize 2000 of the French Jazz Academy, and a special mention as ‘the best French artist of the year’. In 2001, Pilc signed a contract with the independent French company Dreyfus Jazz, and recorded for it with the same trio, a first album (Welcome Home). It was a success around the world. After touring during a year throughout the United States in the most important clubs (Blue Note, Birdland, Sweet Basil, Iridium, Knitting Factory...), Jean-Michel Pilc recorded in 2003 his second album for the company Dreyfus (Cardinal Points). Pilc is one of those middle-age pianists along with Brad Mehldau, Bill Carrothers, Michael Kanan or Ethan Iverson (The Bad Plus); who are characterized for having some postmodern accents, a great technical security and the capability of version a classical standard or a pop theme. Besides his activity with the trio, Jean-Michel offers piano recitals, clinics and master classes. As accompanist he has recently performed and recorded with vocalist Elisabeth Kontomanou (in her sixth album ‘Embrace’ and a duet album ‘Hands and Incantation’). In the year 2004, Pilc released his new album, his first recording as a piano soloist, called Follow Me. For his show at San Borondón Hall of Alfredo Kraus Auditorium, the pianist will be accompanied by Boris Koslov (bass) and Billy Hart (drums).
