THE CHARLIE PARKER LEGACY BAND, THE FIRST SHOW IN ‘RINCON DEL JAZZ’ OF 2009 | |
The music of this American quintet, leaded by Jesse Davis, is inspired in the legendary saxophonist Charlie ‘Bird’ Parker’s. Concert hall San Borondon of Auditorio Alfredo Kraus will be the stage of this concert, next Saturday January 31st, at 10:30 PM. The historic scent of passed away Charlie ‘Bird’ Parker will be played again in “el Rincon del Jazz”, by his musical heirs, The Charlie Parker Legacy Band, next Saturday January 31st, at 10:30 PM in concert hall San Borondon at Auditorio Alfredo Kraus. Leaded by saxophonist Jesse Davis, The Charlie Parker Legacy Band will play a pure jazz, with a classical style, inspired by ‘Bird’ Parker’s works, and reinterpreted in a contemporary way. Along with Davis, trumpet player Wendell Brunious, pianist Dado Moroni, counter bassist Reggie Johnson and Leon Parker at the drums. The importance of saxophonist Charlie ‘Bird’ Parker (1920-1955) in the evolution of jazz music since 1945 is indisputable. His contributions as improviser and his new harmony concepts have influenced many generations of musicians from the past to our present days. But Parker was an exceptional composer as well, he created themes as ‘Au Privave’, ‘Billie's Bounce’, ‘Ko-ko’, ‘Now is the Time’ or ‘Parker's Mood’, which became classics in jazz repertoires. Jesse Davis, one of the contemporary musicians who play the Parker’s style, founded in 2004 a little group: The Charlie Parker Legacy Band, in order to perform Bird’s compositions in a more contemporary way. The group has combined, in its editions, the talent of young improvisers as Terell Stafford, Vincent Herring, Wes Anderson and Grant Stewart with the rhythmic knowledge of veterans as Ronnie Mathews, Ray Drummond, Reggie Johnson, Jimmy Cobb and Alvin Queen. Equally influenced by Charlie Parker, Sonny Stitt and Cannonball Adderley, Jesse exhibits an impeccable technique, a wide range of sounds and a natural affinity for blues in all his interpretations. His music has been defined as ‘neo-bop’. Saxophonist Jesse Davis is one the ‘young lions’ of New Orleans’s Jazz, where hi was born in 1965. He continued the traditions began by the Marsalis family and other musicians of the southern city. No one should be surprised by the fact that Jesse took classes with Ellis Marsalis at the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts. Jesse showed great musical talent since he was a kid, when his brother Roger (a Tuba player) gave him a saxophone and taught him how to play it. Then he studied with Ellis Marsalis, and afterwards he earned a scholarship to go to the Northeastern Illinois University. Subsequently he was transferred to William Patterson College in New Jersey to end up in the New School of New York, where he studied with the critic Ira Gitler, who later on would state: "Jesse was always head and shoulders above the other students". During his student years, Jesse earned many prizes and distinctions in different festivals as: Notre Dame, Wichita State, New York University, Southern University and Loyola. In 1989 he was awarded as ‘The most distinguished musician’ in the Down Music Festival of Beat in Philadelphia. As a freelance musician, Jesse has worked with Jack McDuff, Major Holley, Cecil Payne, Illinois Jacquet, Jay McShann, Chico Hamilton, Junior Mance, Kenny Barron, Tete Montoliu, Cedar Walton, Benny Golson, TanaReid, The Newport All Stars, Roy Hargrove, Hank Jones and a long etcetera of other great names of jazz scene. Since spring of 2004, Jesse resides in Italy. His last project is ‘The Charlie Parker Legacy Band’, a group dedicated to play Charlie Parker’s works; it has performed with great success in many European festivals during 2005 and 2006.
