EL RINCÓN DEL AUDITORIO WELCOMES THE ENIGMATIC AND ALTERNATIVE MUSIC BY JOAN AS POLICE WOMAN | |
Veteran activist of alternative scene, Joan Wasser, will offer a concert next November 7th at 21:00 hours at concert hall San Borondon at Auditorio Alfredo Kraus, in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. Joan Wasser’s voice - compared to the greatest as Dusty Springfield’s, Annette Peacock’s or Chrissie Hynde’s- conduces compositions with an unclassified style: they go through jazz, pop and soul. Now, after the edition of her second album ‘To Survive’ this year, Joan as Police Woman arrives to Auditorio Alfredo Kraus to present her characteristic indie, punk and soul sounds. The concert, part of the space ‘El Rincon del Auditorio’, will be celebrated next November 7th at 21:00 hours at concert hall San Borondon. Pianist, violinist, composer and singer, the musical career of Joan Wasser (Maine- EE UU, 1970), is undoubtlessly extraordinary. Wasser started with The Dambuilders, then she performed with Those Bastards Souls – along with David Shouse (The Grithers) and Steven Drozd (Flaming Lips)- finally she joined Black Beetle. In this last band she played with Michael Tighe and Parker Kindred, both of them former partners of Jeff Buckley’s. Her career in many bands changed radically when her friend Antony invited her to join Antony and The Johnsons, who she worked with until another remarkable colleague, Rufus Wainwright, encouraged her to make a solo project, and invited her to open his concerts. Joan As Police Woman came finally into the spotline, it was named after a 70’s show starred by Angie Dickinson, in which she played a tough female American cop. Wasser’s band offers a music well appreciated by anyone, even for audiences that know little about indie, more introspective, delicate and adult-like music. They are intimate songs about real emotions we can be identified with. Joan define herself as the fruition of punk from her early adolescence, and her passion for soul. Her debut comprises a tormented and velvety voice and a piano in a sort of moderns standards fed by jazz, soul, gospel and folk; all of it wrapped up with pop. This makes out of Joan As Police Woman a disciple of contemporaries such as Feist, Fionna Apple and Cat Power. In this second album ‘To Survive’ (2008), after her successful debut of ‘Real Life’ (2006), the composer and singer lead us through fields of a soft intimate jazz pop, full of dreamlike experiences, with songs of pure feelings and instrumental simplicity. There are two versions openning and closing ‘To Survive’: one by David Sylvian (ex Japan): “Honor Wishes”, and another by Rufus Wainwright, who she had collaborated with previously: “To America”. The jazzie touch of “To Be Loved” and the optimism conveyed by “Hard White Wall” outstand the rest. Concert tickets for Joan as Police Woman are sold at Auditorio Alfredo Kraus, from 10:00 to 14:00 and from 16:30 to 20:30 h, Monday to Friday; and from 10:00 to 14:00 h on Saturdays.
